Tail of The Dragon

Several years ago  I met up with 14 other ST1100 owners for a week long tour of Western Tennessee and Western North Carolina. On this trip we rode the Tail of The Dragon as well as part of the Cherohala Skyway.

Now the Tail of The Dragon is actually US129 and runs from the Foothills Parkway on the west side of the Great Smoky Mountains down into N. Carolina and terminates at Deals Gap Tennessee. The highway goes on from there, but the actual ‘Tail’ stops.

It is one of the sports most famous rides and is only 11 miles long, BUT, it hosts 318 curves in that 11 miles! There are many step climbing turns and reverse curves and the Dragon has claimed many an unwary rider.

There are a lot of other rides in the area, The Cherohala Skyway, Devils Triangle, Moonshiner 28 and several others. It is ‘the’ destination for riders.

My wife and I have also been on it in our Cherokee.

Just so you know, you can NOT buy the Deals Gap Dragon decal online although you can buy shirts and just about anything else. You have to actually go to the store in Deals Gap. Those who are in the ‘know’, when they see the Dragon, know that you were one of the hardy souls brave enough to challenge the Dragon and survive the encounter.

As a bit of history, my family was on it before it became the Tail, as we did a lot of camping in the mountains when the children were younger, and I remember driving the road with a Dodge 4×4 Club Cab pickup and an Apache travel trailer.

If you want more information you can visit the original Deals Gap website:

!! As a little ‘pique’ for your interest, I will be adding information to what I refer to as the ‘little Dragon’..I don’t want to step on any toes, but we have a road here in S.E. Indiana that is a great bike ride. About half the turns of the Dragon but still a nice back country motorcycle trip. Stay tuned!!!
